The 5 Steps to Learning English
You have probably heard of the "12 step programs" that recovering addicts go through. Well, Thinking English has established a 5 step program to help you learn English. Very similar to the 12 step programs, ours is also designed to help people and it is based on principles used throughout the ESL community. The TOEIC test is a well-known industry standard test designed to test English skills of people throughout the international community. The test is used by companies and schools alike but it limits itself to only 4 areas of English. Thinking English goes a step above and beyond and we teach 5 areas.
Thinking English teaches Speaking, Reading, Writing, Listening and THINKING English. The first four everyone is familiar with but what is Thinking English?
Thinking English? What is that?
Thinking English is learning how to NOT translate English to and from your own language. It's learning how to separate your brain into 2 parts. The first part being the English half and the other half is your language. When speaking your language you use no English at all but when speaking English you have to try to forget your own language. For example, if you see an apple on a table you should think "APPLE". If your language is Spanish you should not think "MANZANA". If you are Italian you should not think "MELA". You should see that apple and think "APPLE" and that's it.
Why you ask? Because that second or two you take thinking "manzana" or "mela" before saying "apple" is a second or two of silence or "ummmm" or "uhhhhhh".
This is not how I learned English in the beginning.
You are absolutely right. This is not a technique taught by most teachers. Most ESL students are taught the basics of English by a person from their own country or by someone who speaks their own language. This is generally easier because if the student doesn't understand something the teacher can explain it in the student's own language. It is easier for the student and the teacher to do it this way and that's great. The problem is it just reinforces the concept of translating English to and from the student's language.
